Upstairs at Monk’s
A warm welcome awaits you at one of the oldest pubs in Beverley. Steeped in history, this pub was built and developed throughout the Medieval period, with some parts dating back to 1270.
The Grade 2* listed building is situated on one of Beverley’s oldest roads, Highgate (Old Highgate or London Road, as formerly known), which leads down to Minster Yard North, where Beverley Minster, founded back in 700AD, stands in all its glory.
There is something for everyone at the Monks Walk. They serve a constantly changing selection of Yorkshire brewed real ales and ciders, and traditional pub food. They also have a beer garden to the rear with fantastic views of the Minster and are dog-friendly. There is no duke box or TV – the only background noise in Monks Walk is the buzz of amiable conversation…
….until you go upstairs that is, where a small, intimate, upstairs room has been renovated, et voila ~ ‘Upstairs At Monks’ was born.
Candles, lampshades and ‘unplugged’ acoustic music, all played out in front of a 13th Century exposed wall… magical, with the ghost of a local Blacksmith who fell on hardtimes and hung himself downstairs always keen to take a seat.
We’re now over a year in, and our objective remains to bring challenging and interesting music to Beverley, and to try and convince artists to play ‘down’ for us in our limited capacity room. Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip, Ryley Walker, The Burning Hell, and Martin Stephenson have all bought into our philosophy, and we’ll keep chancing our arm and trying to convince others to do the same
